STUDENTS' EXPERIENCE OF ENGLISH CONVERSATION PRACTICE IN SUPPORTING STUDENTS' SPEAKING SKILL (Narrative Inquiry at an Islamic Junior High School)
The study aimed to explore students' experiences in English conversation practices in supporting students' speaking skills. Qualitative method was used in this study through a narrative design. This study conducted at an Islamic junior high School in Indonesia consisted of 6 students who participated in the conversation training program. The data collection was interview and reflection sheet. The results explored that the conversation at this Islamic boarding school is conducted once a week or 4 times a month which spent 45 minutes. Among six students, five of them were interest and enthusiastic to get into the conversation practice and it effected their achievement in speaking skills like getting more fluently, having consistent in speaking rate in addition to getting more confidence while speaking. Students also narrated that they were guided by the supervisors (language section) in making conversation script. Students felt that the supervisors were very helpful. It was shown from any feedbacks given on their conversation script like examining grammar conformity, word choice or conversation script structure. However, four students found challenges while practicing the conversation practice like difficulty in memorizing conversation script, lack of pronunciation ability, and comprehending the conversation context. In regard with 5 speaking aspects (fluency, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, comprehension) students recounted that there were three aspects which getting better while participating the conversation practice like fluency, vocabulary, and grammar. However other two aspects, namely pronunciation and comprehension were still needs to be continuously honed, evaluated and paid attention to by the language section considering that those aspects were least frequently checked and evaluated by supervisor (language section).
