THE STUDENTS' PERCEPTION ON CODE SWITCHING ENACTED BY AN ENGLISH TEACHER AT A PRIVATE HIGH SCHOOL IN INDONESIA
This research aims to investigate students' perception on code switching enacted by an English teacher. This study employs a qualitative approach as a research design and was conducted at private high school in Indonesia. The participants of this research were three females and seven male students in year ten of a private high school. The data were collected from interviews and focus group discussion. This research used thematic analysis from Braun and Clarke (2006) as the data analysis framework. The findings showed that participants feel helped when the teacher used code-switching in the classroom. In addition, the students also agreed that learning using code-switching was very relaxing and increased students' understanding of the material by the English teacher. Apart form that, there was also a shortcoming of using code switching by the teacher that students reported, i.e. it reduced students' motivation to use English language in class. This indicates that students showcased both their positive response and criticism towards the use of code-switching in English class.
