THE PROBLEMS FACED BY THE STUDENTS IN SPEAKING ENGLISH: A SURVEY OF A SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN INDONESIA
This research investigated senior high school students' speaking problems at an Islamic boarding school in Indonesia. This research was conducted using a survey design by applying a paper-based questionnaire as the instrument to collect the data. The population of the research subject was 67 students of the eleventh-grade senior high school. The data was analyzed by using Microsoft Excel 2016. The mean score of the data survey was 84.87 with a value of 126.67. The final result of this research indicated that two factors influenced students' English-speaking skills, namely linguistic factors (lack of vocabulary, grammar knowledge, pronunciation), and non-linguistic factors (inhibition, low/uneven participants, mother-tongue interference, shyness, low motivation). Each factor showed that lack of vocabulary with a value of (50%) and inhibition with a value of (44%) were the most dominant among the others. The result of this research can be used as input in the English learning process, especially for knowing the factors that prevent students from speaking English.
