THE IMPACT OF ENGLISH SONG IN VOCABULARY LEARNING: A PRE-EXPERIMENTAL STUDY AT A JUNIOR ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOL
A pre-experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test was used in this study to determine whether there is any positive or negative effect on students' vocabulary mastery after they are taught using English songs. The population was 39 students with 21 females and 18 male from the eighth grade of an Islamic junior high school. A written vocabulary test and a field note were used in this study as instruments. To improve students' vocabulary mastery, the researcher used English songs combined with a Vocabulary self-collection (VSS) technique in the treatment. The validity and reliability tests were initially validated using Microsoft Excel as well as pre-test and post-test scores. According to the findings of this study, the average value of the post-test was higher than pre-test. The mean pre-test score was 48,71, and the mean post-test score was 80, 89. The pre-test and post-test mean findings revealed a difference improvement in students' vocabulary mastery. The p-value (sig-2-tailed) of the t-test was 0.00, which is less than 0.05. This result signified that Ho was rejected whereas Ha was approved. It was possible to conclude that learning vocabulary using an English song and VSS in the eighth grade of an Islamic junior high school had a positive impact on students' vocabulary mastery.
