THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING FLASHCARDS IN TEACHING VOCABULARIES AT THE FIRST YEAR STUDENTS OF JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL
English proficiency can be seen from the richness of the vocabulary mastery by the students. This research aims to improve students' English vocabulary skills using flashcards media. This research was carried out on first year students at Islamic junior high schools in Indonesia. This research used quasi experimental design consisting of an experimental class and a control class. The population was 68 students which consisted of 34 students from the control class and 34 students from the experimental class. Data collection techniques used in this research were field notes, pre-test and post-test. To improve students' vocabulary mastery, the researcher used flashcards as learning media combined with a Vocabulary self-service (VSS) technique in the treatment. The validity and reliability tests were initially validated using Microsoft Excel as well as pre-test and post-test scores. Based on the results of the data analysis that has been carried out, the average value of the experiment class (84.51) was greater than the control class (66.47). This means that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test of the experimental and control groups. This result showed that flashcards can improve students' English vocabulary mastery. The p-value (sig-2-tailed) of the t-test was 0.00, which is less than 0.05. This result signified that Ho was rejected whereas H. was approved. It was feasible to draw the conclusion that learning vocabulary using flashcards as learning media and VSS in the seventh grade of an Islamic junior high school had a positive impact on students' vocabulary mastery.
